Diabetes-related
Eye Disease and Low Vision is a one-day course that provides
information on evaluating and prescribing for adult patients with
low vision resulting from a range of conditions related to
diabetes, including: diabetic retinopathy, macular edema, lens/refractive
error changes and vision changes due to medical interventions.Use
of low vision optical and assistive devices related to diabetes
management as well as activities of daily living will be addressed.
Upon completion of this educational activity, the learner should
have a better understanding of how to review, diagnose and provide
vision rehabilitation options for adults with low vision related
to effects of diabetes on the visual system, and will be able to
apply this knowledge in his/her medical practice.
Needs
Assessment
This
course provides information that allows a physician to meet the
needs of a growing population of older adults who are presenting
with functional visual difficulties related to the effects of
diabetes on the visual system that cannot be addressed by medical
treatment (surgery or medication). Understanding the options
available to address these functional needs whether in the
physicians office or by appropriate referral will increase
the physicians understanding of vision rehabilitation methods
and ultimately his/her ability to provide better patient care.

Objectives
Upon
completion of this educational activity, the learner should have a
better understanding of diagnostic, treatment and rehabilitation
options available to increase functional visual ability of
patients with low vision conditions related to effects of diabetes
on the visual system, and will be able to apply this knowledge in
his/her medical practice.
