22nd
Annual Wilmer Nursing Conference
Course
Description
The year
was 1847. Ignaz Semmelweis made the connection between bacteria and
disease. The names of Lister, Pasteur, Reed and Fleming are
legendary. The rise of antibiotics and the triumph of modern
medicine over infectious diseases had begun. Fast forward to 2005:
antibiotic resistant microbials, suppression of the immune system,
vaccine shortage, humans developing disease previously confined to
the animal kingdom. Semmelweis caught on before the rest of us. It's
all in our hands, now. While it's back to basics like hand hygiene
and aseptic technique, it is also the era of the fourth generation
fluoroquinolones and other antimicrobials. Join us at the 22nd
Annual Wilmer Nursing Conference as we discuss prophylaxis and
treatment of ocular infectious diseases.
Objectives
At the completion of
this conference, participants will be able to:
- Identify new
treatment strategies for ocular infectious diseases.
- State the
relationship between autoimmune diseases and corneal ulcer(s).
- Describe in vitro
dynamic changes in unhealed clear corneal cataract incisions
that might adversely affect the risk of intraocular infection.
- Discuss the causes
and prevention of Toxic Anterior Segment Syndrome.
- Describe CDC/WHO
recommendations for ophthalmic surgery for patients with prion
disease.
- List two
advantages of a support group for macular degeneration.
- Identify the level
of fall risk of outpatients undergoing eye surgery, and
implement the appropriate interventions to prevent falls.
- Discuss the
management of patients with antibiotic resistant organisms in
the ambulatory surgery setting.
