Uveitis
for the (Other) Subspecialist
Course Description
Uveitis
for the (Other) Sub-Specialist is aimed at both general
ophthalmologists and other sub-specialists who need to manage their
patients with ocular inflammatory disease to the highest standard of
care. A full day will be devoted to the medical and surgical
management of uveitis in a general retina practice, especially the
use of newer treatment modalities. In addition to topics of interest
to retina specialists, there will be advanced material pertinent to
pediatric and cornea/external disease specialists.
Course Objectives
Upon
completion of the course, attendees should be able to:
-
Recognize
all forms of posterior uveitis and apply rationale criteria for
the acquisition and interpretation of ancillary confirmatory
tests such as fluorescein and ICG angiography, ultrasound, OCT,
immunologic and radiographic studies.
-
Select
patients that will benefit from diagnostic vitrectomy and
evaluate the possible advantages of 25 gauge instrumentation for
vitrectomy in uveitis patients.
-
Prescribe
and monitor newer immunomodulatory drugs alone or with the
support of an internal medicine colleague. Assess the risks and
benefits of systemic treatment vs. local treatment, and select
and counsel patients who will benefit from long-term control of
intraocular inflammation with implantable drug devices.
-
Manage
special patient groups such as children with uveitis.
-
Prescribe
and monitor all forms of corticosteroid therapy in an expert
manner with an appreciation for the minimization of steroid side
effects.
